THE  LIVING  CASK

Back in July 1920 the noted literary critic and oenophile Professor George Saintsbury published
his " Notes on a Cellar - Book".
In those war - weary days it was an immediate success, being reprinted four times by 1923.
He devoted a scant eight pages to whisky, but what pages !
In them we find this trenchant vieuws (' I had never cared, and do not to this day care, much
for the advertised blends, which, for this or that reason the public likes, or thinks it likes' )
and the following magnificently impractical recommendation:
"The more excellent way  ( to store whisky at home) …… is to establish a cask of wathever
size your purse and cellar will admitt, from a "butt" to an "octave" or an "anker"or even less:
fill it up with good and drinkable whisky from six to eight years old, stand it up on end, tap
it half - way down or even a little higher and, when you get to or near the tap, fill it up again with whisky fit to drink, but not to old ! ".
What a splendid proposition, and what a splendid prospect such a cask would present!
But it must be admitted, hardly a realistic one in today's home. Even if your partner would agree.
