KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY.
The Cairn is owned by Gordon & MacPhail, a fourth-generation family business. Starting out back in the 19th Century as shop owners, we have grown to be wholesalers, whisky bottlers and distillery owners. But throughout this growth we have always kept true to our origins and remain an independent family business firmly rooted in the local community.

The intention is to produce an unpeated single malt from the 2 traditional wash stills and 4 spirit stills. Capacity 2.000.000 Ltrs

First manager is Mhairi Winters formerly from Balvenie and Kininvie. The first whisky is expected in the mid 2030s.

Every journey must start somewhere. Ours begins at 57 degrees North of the equator which has inspired the name of our first whiskies.

Available to taste and buy only at The Cairn Distillery, CRN57° is a range of Scotch whiskies created by our master blenders giving you a chance to discover notes, flavours and aromas you’ll eventually experience in the first expressions produced at The Cairn. Taste tomorrow, today.

Our core range offers a sweet palate, with hints of pepper and oak as we move up the age ranges.

On the nose, you can expect fruit, spice and subtle candied undertones.

The premium ages offers stewed fruit scents with hints of sweet caramel, aged oak and aged leather.

Smooth on the palate, roasted coffee bean combines with a hint of dried tobacco and an undertone of cracked black pepper.

2.  Do you have any specifications on The Cairn Distillery which began operations on May 27, 2022? I know that its capacity is 2-Mlpa, using combo of brewer’s and distiller’s yeast, 3 Wash stills @ 13,500L capacity, sherry cask maturation and 6 stills.

As part of our Beacon of Inspiration series, we are offering three aspiring snappers the chance to work with Rachel Cohen - a professional iPhone photographer with a hugely popular Instagram account - to hone their skills and learn new techniques to create insta-worthy images.  
Our three lucky winners will join Rachel at The Cairn on 19th-20th June for an inspiring smartphone camera workshop.  With tips on how to capture architecture, the environment and movement, as well as insider information on how to compose food and drink images - this is an opportunity not to be missed!
To enter all you need to do is tell us why you’ve always harboured a dream to become an expert photographer and highlight what it would mean to join Rachel on an all-expenses paid trip to our beautiful home nestled in the Cairngorms.

Our visitor centre sits on the river Spey and our glass fronted tasting room has spectacular views of the Cairngorms making it the perfect place to enjoy a whisky.  Our experiences start from £25, with three options for tours available and our bistro – the Gathering – is open for light lunches (booking is recommended).

For those of you venturing to The Cairn this summer, make sure to pick up our newest release – CRN57 Step Two - a limited-edition 14 Year Old blended malt Scotch whisky, which marks the second step on our path to releasing our first single malt.

Limited to 1000 bottles, it provides a delicious snapshot of our progress so far as we look towards the future of our whiskies.

Our Head Distiller, Mhairi Winters, said: "Being part of The Cairn's journey from the outset has been such a privilege, and to now be able to share with you a sneak peek of what's to come feels like another step on the adventure to our Single Malt Whiskies of the future."
"I am so pleased with how our spirit is maturing. These first-fill Sherry hogsheads have given the 3 Year Old Single Malt a gorgeous, luminous amber colour and have really allowed the distillery’s character to shine through. Our aim was to produce a vibrant, fruity spirit and I think this really shows in this first release: full of ripe red fruits, warming cinnamon and richly moreish!"
Tasting Notes
Nose: Vanilla and milk chocolate. Rich golden sultanas, fresh lime and walnuts.
Palate: Milk chocolate, with fruity cranberry and raspberry bursts followed by pepper, charred oak and cinnamon.
Finish: A spicy finish with fresh mint and lime zest.
