The Miltonduff Distillery, Elgin

The Miltonduff Distillery was built in 1824 close to the site of ancient Pluscarden Abbey, where Benedictine Monks once brewed renowed ales.
Legend has is that an abbot kneeling on a stone invoked a blessing on the waters of the nearby Black Burn and, thereafter the drink distilled from them was clalled 'Aqua Vita'
Clear water from this same burn is still used in making The Malt of Miltonduff.

Miltonduff  1998
This gigantic distillery startd life as a small illicit farm distillery. Nowadays a high – capacity
distillery for the Chivas and Ballantine’s blends, but its single malt is largely unknown

This example from a refill sherry cask is special. The nose starts clean with honey, pine nuts and dried fruit. A light prickling leads to sweet malty overtones with some vanilla and soft
yellow fruit. Milk chocolate, coffee and soft sweet smoke cover the tongue. This covering lasts forever. A fantastic balance for such a young whisky. The finish is very pleasant, light
bitterly sweet and warming. A proud First Cask bottling

Einde 1999:
na een verbouwing en modernisering van E 1 miljoen kan Miltonduff 5,25 miljoen spirit per jaar produceren.

Established in 1824 from buildings once used as a meal-mill by the monks at the nearby Pluscarden Priory, Miltonduff Distillery produces a fragrant, flowery malt with hints of peat and vanilla.
It is said that the Black Burn from which the distillery draws its water, was blessed by a saintly abbot in the 15th century, and that the stone upon which he knelt was built in to the distillery walls.
Miltonduff Distillery was founded in 1824. The distillery was extensively modernised in the 1930s and again in the 1970s.
Miltonduff whisky is a very important part of the Ballantine blend. As well as a distillery the site is also home to laboratories, engineering support and centralised warehousing for Allied distilleries.
Miltonduff also produced Mosstowie Single Malt between 1964 and 1981.

Miltonduff was, briefly, part of Allied Distiller’s Caledonian Malts range (alongside Laphroaig, Tormore, Scapa and Glendronach) but other than a limited edition 18-year-old cask strength bottling, no official releases have taken place under Chivas Brothers' ownership. Licensed bottlings are made under the auspices of Gordon & MacPhail. Some Mosstowie (see below) also occasionally surfaces.

One wonders what the monks would have made of it. Moonshining was commonplace in the surroundings of Pluscarden Abbey in the smuggling era of the late 18th and early 19th century. Whether any monastic distillation ever took place is unknown – the original monastery fell into ruin in the early 17th century, but was restored in 1948 and is now the only medieval monastery still inhabited by monks. Distillation certainly took place at Milton Farm where the abbey’s old meal mill once stood.

Miltonduff (the suffix comes from Duff family which owned the estate) went legal in 1824 and by the end of the century was one of the largest producers in Scotland, making in excess of one million litres a year and using triple distillation (an unusual technique for Highland/Speyside distilleries).

Its next landmark came in 1936 when it was bought by Canadian distiller Hiram Walker which was beginning its Scottish expansion (Ballantine’s, Dumbarton).

In 1964, a pair of ‘Lomond’ stills was installed producing a malt which was named Mosstowie. The stills operated until 1981. A significant expansion in 1974 saw capacity increased to more than 5m litres per annum with three pairs of stills now operating. In 2005 it became part of Chivas Brothers.

Mosstowie
Mosstowie was one of a handful of short-lived malt whiskies produced on Lomond stills within another distillery – in this case Miltonduff, near Elgin.

Hiram Walker (Scotland) Ltd. was the great pioneer of Lomond stills in the 1950s. Compared to traditional pot stills they were a lot more versatile – you could adjust the position of the lyne arm and the number of rectifying plates in the neck to vary the amount of reflux and thus heaviness of the spirit. It was deemed perfect for the company’s flagship blend – Ballantine’s Finest, and so Lomond stills were installed at Hiram Walker’s Inverleven, Glenburgie, Scapa and Miltonduff distilleries.

The whisky produced using Miltonduff’s Lomond stills was named Mosstowie, and while the majority was used for the Ballantine’s blend, there have been occasional independent bottlings as a single malt.

The Canadian distiller Hiram Walker had owned George Ballantine & Son since 1935, and bought Miltonduff distillery on Speyside a year later.

With the post-war surge in blended Scotch, especially in North America, the firm needed to ramp up production and produce a sufficient variety of malts for the likes of Ballantine’s Finest. One of these was Mosstowie – a so-called ‘Lomond malt’ which went into production in 1964 at Miltonduff distillery.

But with the rectifying plates notoriously hard to clean and little demand from other blenders, Mosstowie was abandoned in 1981 and the stills were ripped out and replaced with traditional pot stills.
