'Bright zing despite the years'
This malt was made on Lomond stills at Hiram Walker's Glenburgie Distillery between 1958 and 1981. and was named after the company's head of production.
The Lomond technique, which was invented by Alistair Cunningham (who later became M D of Allied Distillers, successors to Hiram Walker), allowed whiskies of different character to be produced from the same wort. This sample is certainly from the lighter end of the scale, though no less interesting for that.

A refill barrel has produced a straw-gold colour and a light, sweet floral and sol venty nose with notes of pineapple, marzipan and vanilla¬ tastes as it smells but is dry and has enough acidity to give it a bright zing despite the many years.

This distillery, between Forres and Alves, produced spirit using Lomond stills in the
60’s and 70’; few casks survived.

The nose has huge fruit perfume – ripe cantaloupe melon, cola cubes and windfall apples
in autumn orchards. Occasionally it has old leather and nail – varnish – one panel member
was reminded of ‘naughty dungeons’(no – one asked for more information) The unreduced
palate has apple, melon and other exotic fruits, as well as elderflower and touches of smoke
and spice.

With water, the nose has fabulous perfume, macadamia nuts and church incense, while the
taste turns to red liquorice. Gloriously  different

ging.

For a few years a small number of distilleries dotted around Scotland produced special
whiskies. Glenburgie thoughwas one though those "Lomond"stills were fed by the same washbacks which also fermented for the ordinary stills, this very different whisky was re -
named and treated as if from a different distillery, in this case Glen Craig.
In 1955 Alastair Cunningham and his Hiram Walker colleague, draftsman Arthur Warren, developed the Lomond still to produce a light, fruity spirit for the likes of Ballantine’s.

After a successful trial at Inverleven, the malt whisky distillery within the firm’s Dumbarton distillery complex in Dumbarton, it was decided to install a Lomond wash and spirit still at Glenburgie in Moray in 1958.

Christened Glencraig, its newmake spirit was distinct from Glenburgie’s, and gave Hiram Walker another malt for its blends without having to invest in a whole new distillery.

Unfortunately the so-called rectifying plates in the neck of Lomond stills were notoriously hard to clean, and in 1981 they were abandoned at Glenburgie. Since then occasional bottles of Glencraig single malt have been released by Duncan Taylor, Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

Today Glenburgie distillery is operated by Chivas Brothers, its whisky still largely used for the Ballantine’s blend.

SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
While independent bottlings of Glencraig occasionally appear, it was never intended as a single malt in its brief life. It was distilled by Hiram Walker at the Glenburgie distillery to provide a different style of malt for the firm’s blends, such as its top-selling Ballantine’s Finest.

The difference came from using Lomond stills which incorporated various perforated plates and an adjustable lyne arm to vary the reflux. It was named Glencraig after Hiram Walker’s production director, Willie Craig.

A 1975 bottling by Gordon & MacPhail was described as ‘sweet and fruity… with a spicy edge and orange peel aromas’.
