Elspeth, Agnes and Ethel Robertson wished to use the future success of the family business to extend the support they had given to charities in their lifetimes.

The strategy off Edrington is to intensify the focus on becoming the world's leading builder of ultra-premium spirit brands.

In 1996 Highland Distilleries acquired a majority interest in Macallan, and three years later Edrington and William Grant & Sons bought Highland Distilleries for £601 million, with Suntory and Rémy Cointreau already shareholders.

Edrington Group, the parent company of the Macallan and Highland Park, is buying the Glenrothes brand from British wine and spirits merchant Berry Bros. & Rudd.in 2010.

The Macallan is the central focus, supported by Highland Park and The Glenrothes in the fast-growing Single Malt category.

The portfolio is completed with The Famous Grouse Blended Scotch Whisky and Brugal rum in the Dominican Republic.
