(1983) RED SQUIRREL (Sciurus vulgaris)
This little creature has lived in Britain since prehistoric times but is now mainly restricted to large areas of mature forest especially Scotc pine woods. Their de¬cline is thought to be due to loss of habitat, clear felling and a little competition from the 'grey'.
The squirrel's diet is mainly cone seeds, buds and shoots but it also forages for nuts and acorns. A tell-tale signs of their presence is a tree stump often used as a table. Being rather shy it tends to stay up in the tree tops and squirrels have their own system of 'roads' among branches.
The Scottish Wildlife Trust is a charitable organisation whose aims are to promote the conservation of the wildlife of Scotland. A donation will be made to the Trust for each bottle sold.

Strathmill Distillery was established in 1891 in a converted grain mill. The Pied Wagtail is a familar sight in the distillery yard and on the banks of the nearby River Isla, which provides water for cooling. A spring on the site provides processing water.

This deep amber, single malt has a light, rounded body, a creamy sweet flavour, with a dry finish and choclaty aftertaste.
Nose: Dry, apples, nutty and banana. Grassy. Palate: Soft, smooth, syrupy, vanilla, nuts. Finish: Soft, flowery, vanilla, dryness

STRATHMILL
Keith, Banffshire. Licentiehouder: Justerini & Brooks Ltd. Onderdeel van International Distillers & Vintners Ltd. (I.D.V.). Eigendom van Grand Metropolitan. (GrandMet)
.

I.D.V. liet zelf in 1974 Auchroisk bouwen.

The distillery’s main production quirk comes in the form of a purifier pipe running from the lyne arm into the body of the spirit stills.

Like Glenlossie and Glen Spey, this adds a lightly oily character to the new make, here picked up almost as olive oil which mixes well with the lightly fruity/grassy notes.

Thanks to the River Isla, Keith has a long history of milling, both for meal and weaving (the town still has a kilt museum). Two of those old mill sites have since been converted to distilleries, Glen Keith and Strathmill.

Built in 1892, it was originally called Glenisla (with -Glenlivet suffixed). Its original owners sold it in 1895 to W & A Gilbey which was by then building its holdings in Scotch [see Glen Spey, Knockando]. As Gilbey moved through various incarnations so Strathmill became an integral part of the J&B family.

Its only official release is as part of the Flora & Fauna range.
