Pittyvaich Distillery was built in the early 1970s by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd and after only 30 years of production mothballed in 2002.
The distillery had two wash stills and two spirit stills and was primarily used in Bell's blend. The stills were an exact copy of its´close neighbour Dufftown Distillery, which was also part of the Arthur Bell & Sons group.
In 1991 Diageo released the first official bottling under the Flora and Fauna range. Pitty¬vaich was used briefly to produce gin as a trial in the event that it would need to be used should a disaster happen at the main plant in London.
The results of this were never bottled.

"Hoe - down in the barn"

We, the Tasting Panel, verify that the Scotch Malt Whisky inside this bottle has been passed
Under some of the most scrupulous noses in the world and approved for release as a Society bottling. Only single cask whiskies that promise to intrigue, entertain and delight our members are selected, true yo our motto: “To leave no nose upturned”

A complex nose: bubble – gum and fruits sweets against pot – pourri, violets and tobacco.
The unreduced nose smells of leather and lemons in straw. The palate is sweet but also has
apples, pipe tobacco, aniseed and tar. Gets better with time

Limited Edition
6000 Numbered Bottles
Diageo Scotland Limited, Edinburgh

Perhaps the shortest lived of all Speyside Distilleries. Pittyvaich was built in 1975
as a partner for nearby Dufftown. The name is Gaelic & may refer to an early
dwelling on the site. A “Farmstead at the Birchwood”. Nestling near red deer
country in the Dullan Glen.

Pittyvaich drew process water from two springs, convalleys & balliemore and
operated for just 18 years until closing in 1993, so you could say that the intriguing
& rare limited edition malt whisky in this bottle, distilled in 1989, is older than the distillery from whicj it came.

Very fresh for its age & appetizingly crisp, clean & grassy, it makes a fine, sweet – natured & delightfully unusual aperitif.

PITTYVAICH  also see Dufftown

Dufftown, Banffshire.

Guinness nam Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd in 1986 over. Guinness neemt in 1987 The Distillers Company Ltd over.

Originally built to aid demand for Bell's blended whisky, Pittyvaich sadly grew surplus to requirements.

Not commonly seen, Pittyvaich shows an estery top note which rise above the classic Bell’s ‘nutty-spicy’ house style. It was bottled – from Sherry cask – as part of the Flora & Fauna range while there are occasional bottlings from Diageo’s annual Special Release programme.

Pittyvach was a utilitarian-looking distillery which was built for purely commercial purposes and was Arthur Bell & Sons’ response to the sudden leap in the brand’s fortunes in the 1970s when it became Britain’s top-selling blend and anything seemed possible.

The firm already ran the Dufftown distillery and so in 1975 erected a shed next door and installed two – eventually four – stills inside. Bell’s was bought by Guinness in 1985, with the latter firm going on to controversially purchase DCL the year after to form United Distillers. A period of rationalisation of distilling capacity followed and Pittyvaich was considered as surplus to requirements. It closed in 1993 and was demolished in 2002.
