In the 1950’s Alistair Cunningham, a chemical engineer with Hiram Walker, designed the
“Lomond” Still a type of still which allowed different styles of whisky to be produced.

In 1964 a pair of Lomond stills were installed at Miltonduff Distillery and Mosstowie Single
Malt was produced.

This continued until 1981 when the demand for Miltonduff, a key component of Ballantines
Blend increased.

As a result the Lomond stills were altered to produce Miltonduff whisky

Two Lomond stills were added to the Miltonduff distillery in 1964 in order to produce Mosstowie.
The stills were replaced in 1981 with copies of the original Miltonduff stills. The Lomond stills produced a heavier more oily whisky than that of Miltonduff

Since 1895 Gordon & Macphail has worked with the majority of Scotland’s distilleries
and today, matures, selects and bottles some of the world’s finest and rarest Single
Malt Scotch Whiskies

Between 1964 and 1981, Miltonduff Distillery produced two different Singl Malts:
“Lomond”stills were installed to produce Mosstowie whisky.

These stills were altered in 1981; meaning only very small quantities of Mosstowie
remain in existence.

Tasting Note
Matured in Refill Sherry casks, there are hints of roast coffee and ripe fruits
(blueberries) with a touch of cederwood.
The palate is sweet initially with ground black pepper, hazlenuts and a lingering sweetness.

Elgin, Morayshire.

As a result the Lomond stills were altered to produce Miltonduff whisky.

Hiram Walker (Scotland) Ltd. was the great pioneer of Lomond stills in the 1950s. Compared to traditional pot stills they were a lot more versatile – you could adjust the position of the lyne arm and the number of rectifying plates in the neck to vary the amount of reflux and thus heaviness of the spirit. It was deemed perfect for the company’s flagship blend – Ballantine’s Finest, and so Lomond stills were installed at Hiram Walker’s Inverleven, Glenburgie, Scapa and Miltonduff distilleries.

The whisky produced using Miltonduff’s Lomond stills was named Mosstowie, and while the majority was used for the Ballantine’s blend, there have been occasional independent bottlings as a single malt.

The Canadian distiller Hiram Walker had owned George Ballantine & Son since 1935, and bought Miltonduff distillery on Speyside a year later.

With the post-war surge in blended Scotch, especially in North America, the firm needed to ramp up production and produce a sufficient variety of malts for the likes of Ballantine’s Finest. One of these was Mosstowie – a so-called ‘Lomond malt’ which went into production in 1964 at Miltonduff distillery.

But with the rectifying plates notoriously hard to clean and little demand from other blenders, Mosstowie was abandoned in 1981 and the stills were ripped out and replaced with traditional pot stills.

Mosstowie was one of a handful of short-lived malt whiskies produced on Lomond stills within another distillery – in this case Miltonduff, near Elgin.
