SPRINGBANK THE VINTAGES
SPRINGBANK 31 YEARS OLD Vintage Feb 66 / Bottled Oct 97 / 489 Numbered Bottles
J & A Mitchell & Co Ltd, Springbank Distillery, Campbeltown.
have almost all come from within a radius of eight miles of the Distillery: the barley
from Macharioch, Machrimore and Lephenstrath farms, malted at the Distillery
using peat for drying from the Aros Moss at the Rhoin and mashed in water from
the Crosshill Loch on the flank of Ben Ghuilean above Limecraigs.
The coal used for heating the mashing water and the stills ws mined from Argyll Colliery at Tridigal near Machrihanish.
The outstanding exception to the eight mile rule are the Bourbon casks in which the
whisky lay maturing in the Distillery warehouse.
The whisky has been bottled at the Distillery at its natural cask strenght without any
chill – filtering, fining or added colouring which in itself would make the whisky exceptional.
The coal mine at Machrihanish has now been closed for many years and there is no
prospect of it being reopened ensuring that this bottle is unrepeatable.
