The Kingsbarns Company of Distillers was established by former golf caddie Douglas Clement to build and operate a new distillery in Fife.
Fundraising proved a sticking point for Clement, despite interest from a group of private backers and even a government grant.
Eventually the project was bought out by Wemyss Distillery Ltd, owned by the Wemyss family, which opened Kingsbarns distillery and visitor centre in December 2014.
Clement dreamed of building his own whisky distillery near Kingsbarns Golf Links in Fife, and established The Kingsbarns Company of Distillers in 2009 to realise that dream.
Clement spent the next five years raising the capital needed to build Kingsbarns distillery, the initial £100,000 of which was injected by 32 private investors, many of whom were members of Clement’s former golf club.
A further £670,000 came from a government grant, but despite a high-profile crowdfunding campaign The Kingsbarns Company of Distillers fell short of the £1.6 million needed to build the distillery.
Unable to reach his target alone, Clement sold the business to Wemyss Distillery Ltd, which is owned by the Wemyss family, founders of independent bottler Wemyss Malts in 2013. Six months later building had begun on the distillery, which was operational by the end of 2014.

LOWLAND SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
Once fully matured, Kingsbarns’ whisky will be a traditional floral and fruity Lowland single malt. Although the Wemyss family intend to predominantly use first fill ex-Bourbon barrels to age its whisky, a number of different expressions are planned that can reflect the spirit’s versatility.
All in all it took five years for Kingsbarns Distillery to grow from a brainwave of former golf caddie Douglas Clement into a working whisky distillery, but just 18 months to build. As with all new distilleries, regardless of the scale, working capital is a priority but something Clement had none of. What he did have, however, was a box full of business cards gathered from 13 years spent carrying bags for wealthy golfers at Kingsbarns Golf Links on the Fife coast, a few miles from St Andrews.
Realising there was no nearby whisky distillery to satisfy the curiosity of the course’s visitors, and having come across a derelict 18th century farm steading on the Cambo Estate, situated just a short distance from Kingsbarns, Clement decided to build his own.
The initial £100,000 seed capital was raised from 32 investors, many of whom were golfers Clement knew from Kingsbarns, which enabled him to secure planning permission to transform the farm steading into a working distillery. Two years of further fundraising through crowdfunding sites and government grants failed to procure the £1.6 million needed to actually build the distillery. Even when a Scottish government grant of £670,000 was given to the project in 2012, Clement still fell short of his target.
But his efforts attracted the attention of the Wemyss family, owners of Wemyss Malts, who incidentally have a historical link with the site, as the seventh Earl of Wemyss owned part of the Cambo Estate between 1759 and 1783. In January 2013, Clement sold the business to the Wemyss family.
With Clement remaining as a director, and funding now fully in place, work began on Kingsbarns distillery within six months and was up and running within 18 months.
The relatively small distillery aims to fill just 24 casks per week (140,000 litres per year), although fully matured whisky won’t be available until at least 2018.

KINGSBARNS DEBUTS FLAGSHIP DREAM TO DRAM
Fife distillery Kingsbarns has launched its first flagship whisky, a three-year-old single malt named Kingsbarns Dream to Dram.

The single malt, produced exclusively using barley locally grown at the distillery’s East Neuk home, is Kingsbarns’ first whisky aged to a minimum three years to be released for general sale.
William Wemyss, owner of Kingsbarns distillery, said: ‘Dream to Dram is a wonderful single malt that I think perfectly captures the Lowland style and the character of our East Neuk home in Fife.
‘So much hard work, skill and dedication has gone into crafting our whisky over the past three years so my thanks and congratulations go to everyone at Kingsbarns.’
The whisky is said to be ‘clean yet complex’ with ‘banana, pineapple syrup and summer berries’ on the nose with ‘soft toffee and custard pastry’ on the palate.
Bottled at 46% abv, 90% of the whisky has been matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels from Heaven Hill distillery, while the remaining 10% has been aged in shaved, toasted and recharred wine casks.
Priced at £44.95 per 70cl bottle, the whisky is currently available from the Kingsbarns distillery website and specialist retailers across the UK.
The whisky is also ‘on its way’ to being released in some European countries and Taiwan, with a more widespread release in the near future.
Kingsbarns distillery was opened in 2014 by the Wemyss family, owners of Edinburgh-based independent bottler Wemyss Malts, in an effort to realise the family’s ‘long-held dream’ to produce single malt whisky in Fife.
Although Dream to Dram is the distillery’s first general release, it follows the limited release of Kingsbarns Founders Reserve in December 2018, another three-year-old available exclusively to members of the distillery’s Founders Club.
